Alexandria is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is the seventh largest independent city in the state of Virginia. It is located just along the bank of the Potomac river, only seven miles from Washington D.C. The center of Alexandria is known as Old Town, with a large number of boutiques, restaurants, antique shops, and movie theatres. According to estimates, the city was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples approximately 10,000 years ago. The first deaths in the North and South during the American Civil War took place in Alexandria, when a northern mission took place to remove a confederate flag from the Marshall House Inn. While descending from the hotel, the soldier, Ellsworth, was killed. Shortly after, a battle broke out, and the hotel owner who killed Ellsworth was also fatally wounded.
