The Hidden Treasures of Bakersfield, California
Bakersfield locals enjoy the city's impressive agricultural production, history, and relaxing parks. In 1861, disastrous floods crumbled the original settlement founded in 1860. During California's gold rush, lawyer and former colonel, Thomas Baker, moved to Kern River. The area then became known as Baker's Field. Travelers would stop here on their way to collect gold, and by 1870 this little town had a population of 600. Today, it has grown to a population of more than 380,000 people and is even home to two of the world's largest carrot producing farms.
To get a full taste of Bakersfield's culture, attend the annual Kern County Fair. The fair showcases the area's produce, concerts, and a rodeo. Take the family out to enjoy Bakersfield's oldest and most historic restaurants. Opening its doors in 1954, Wool Growers serves meals from the South of France and Northern Spain. They look to create a warm and inviting family atmosphere for their guests.
Grab a table at Narducci's Cafe, another one of the city's oldest restaurants, to enjoy Italian Basque cuisine. Bring the kids to the Lori Brock Discovery Center, where they'll find a world of imagination and entertainment. The center provides a space for children to play and learn with a focus on science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
Bakersfield is also famed for its electric guitar twist on country music. The style dominated the music industry for nearly a decade, played by music stars such as Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam. Locals can dine at Buck Owen's Crystal Palace. The attraction is a combined steakhouse, theater, and museum showcasing Owens' country music career.
The people of Bakersfield enjoy exploring the 370 acres of Hart Park along the Kern River. The park has two lakes where visitors can fish for trout, catfish, and bass. The park's wildlife habitat features kit foxes, opossums, raccoons, beavers, muskrats, skunks, and ducks. The park also has picnic spots with tables and grills.
