Beaverton has a fascinating history. Before the appearance of European-American settlers, the Atfalati tribe inhabited the region. A Kalapuya sub-group, the Atfalati were hunters and gatherers who lived off deer, roots, fish, nuts, and berries. They practiced infant head-flattening and wore distinctive red-feather headdresses.
The first U.S. settlers arrived in the mid-19th century. They built a grist mill in 1847, shortly followed by a sawmill and a plank road. The settlement grew after the Civil War, and the town incorporated in 1893 with a population of 400. Beaverton continued to grow throughout the 20th century. It was a hub for automobile dealerships in the 1910s and '20s, and even had its own film studio. Beaverton's first library opened in 1925, and the town has continued to grow into the thriving community we know today.
