Sadly, one of the saddest days in the country's history occurred in Dallas, the site of President John F. Kennedy's assassination on Nov. 22, 1963. The city pays homage to this tragic moment with many landmarks and museums at the site of the shooting. In 1993, officials declared Dealey Plaza a National Historic Landmark. Visit the Sixth Floor Museum, within the building formerly known as the Texas Book Depository, to learn more about Kennedy's career, the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, and his untimely death. There are hundreds of photographs of the assassination scene, as well as a closer look into some pretty interesting conspiracy theories. You can even see Lee Harvey Oswald's vantage point, preserved behind glass.

The art district in the southeast of Uptown is the largest urban arts district in the country. Here, you'll find the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and the Winspear Opera House. There's also the Dallas Black Dance Theater and the Dallas Museum of Art. The city also offers a 90-minute tour of the art district if you want to get a closer look at the architecture and exhibits.

Once you're in the arts district, check out Klyde Warren Park. The park opened in 2012. Since then, it's become a popular gathering spot with a tree-lined promenade, a children's park, a botanical garden, a reading room, a dark park, and a performance pavilion. Food trucks love to come to the park by the dozens, so there's always something fun and new to try.

One landmark you can't miss is Reunion Tower. It's 561 feet tall and has 259 LED lights to keep it illuminated all night long. Go up to the top deck and you'll get a stunning view of Dallas. They have a telescope to zoom in on all your favorite places. The tower is also home to Cloud Nine Cafe and Wolfgang Puck's Fix Sixty.

Then visit Dallas' entertainment district in Deep Ellum. It's full of live music, fun food, bars, and one-of-a-kind shops. Since the 1880s, this area has housed blues legends and was even the inspiration behind the Grateful Dead's "Deep Elem Blues." Try some concept bars, including the trailer park-themed Double Wide. Check out the art-lined streets while you choose between ramen, tacos, or barbecue for dinner.

And Dallas in September means the opening of the Texas State Fair when 2 million people wave "howdy" to Big Tex and enjoy the many sights, sounds, and oh-so-many fried foods.
