Henrico is one of the earliest English settlements in the country. Originally named Henricus after Prince Henry, the oldest son of King James I.

Founded in 1611 by English naval commander Sir Thomas Dale, Henrico isn't far from where Pocahontas lived among the Appomattoc tribe of the Powhatan Confederacy. The area saw a series of Civil War battles during the Peninsula Campaign. In 1864, Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart took a fatal blow at the Battle of Yellow Tavern.
