Better Landscaping in Kansas City
No wonder Kansas City is called the "Heart of America." The city sits near the geographic and population center of the contiguous United States. It's also a welcoming city with big-hearted people.
We may call ourselves the "City of Fountains," but The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named KC "City of Music" in 2018. You can still city the influence of the 1920's era when Count Basie and KC native Charlie Parker ushered in the Bebop style. Today, the city maintains its heritage with live music venues in the Westport entertainment district and jazz clubs around 18th and Vine. Other modern musicians coming out of KC include Janelle Monae, Puddle of Mudd, and Isaac James.
The city also has a good relationship with the performing arts. In the 1920s, it was the center of the Vaudevillian Orpheum circuit. Kansas City Repertory Theatre is now the region's top professional theatre company. The Kansas City Symphony, founded in 1982, performs at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The Kansas City Ballet also performs at the Kauffman Center.
Kansas city is also famous for its food, especially Kansas City-style barbecue. Henry Perry began the local tradition of slowly smoking meat in the early 20th century. Today, the city has too many barbecue restaurants to count. One local favorite is Harp Barbecue, where pitmasters Tyler Harp and Zach Parker smoke tender sliced brisket in the parking lot every Saturday. At Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue, dedicated cooks make every ingredient, from croutons and ranch dressing, to pit-smoked meats. Jones Bar-B-Q, now famous for its appearance on Netflix's Queer Eye, opens for only one hour a day and always has a line trailing down the street. At Jones, the owners work day and night to perfect their meats according to a secret family recipe. These are only a few examples of Kansas City's many, many BBQ gems.
Kansas City is home to the National WWI Museum and Memorial, which houses the world's most comprehensive collection of artifacts. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, only three blocks from the Plaza, boasts over 40,000 works of art.
Families can enjoy the 202-acre Kansas City Zoo, which has more than 1,700 animals and often hosts activities for all ages on weekends. There's also Worlds of Fun with over 100 rides including seven roller coasters.
