As part of the Twin Cities, Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota, with roughly 430,000 people calling it home. Situated on the Mississippi River, Minneapolis has evolved as an essential point of commerce in the Midwest. Currently home to five Fortune 500 companies, Minneapolis has a complicated history.
The Dakota Sioux were the first inhabitants until French explorers arrived in 1680. As the population grew, settlers and Native American tribes competed for scarce resources. This was the start of centuries of turmoil. Minneapolis developed around Saint Anthony Falls. It's the Mississippi River's highest waterfall and made a great source of power for the lumber industry. With 17 sawmills, business boomed. Besides the mills, Minneapolis was home to a competitive prosthetics business, various ironworks, and flour mills. Pillsbury and General Mills both have their roots in the milling industry here.
Though marred by corruption and social issues, the city's history also includes reform and dramatic attempts at change. As a testament to this, Minneapolis is home to one of the country's largest LGBTQ populations. The inclusive Uptown neighborhood is buzzing with gastropubs, bistros, shops, and vintage stores. Combining culture, history, and reform, Minneapolis is also known for its thriving music and performing arts.
The Guthrie Theater, established in 1963, is a center for training, performance, production, and education. The theater complex includes three auditoriums, a seafood restaurant, a coffee bar, and several public spaces. However, no place is better known for its impact on music than First Avenue Nightclub and The Entry. They're both found in the same historic building, which opened in 1937 as a Greyhound bus depot. After the depot relocated, the art deco-style building transformed into a disco. While it has changed over time, this venue has been the starting point for many iconic performers, including Prince. During a threatened closure some years back, fans and music lovers only took one week to convince investors to give the locale another chance.
Besides music and theater, Minneapolis has many outdoor activities. With a chain of lakes, wetlands, creeks, and waterfalls, Minnesotans enjoy a plethora of water sports. Regularly named the best biking city in the country, Minneapolis has 44 miles of bike lanes, 83 miles of off-street trails, and an extensive rental system. To enjoy both the water and trails, all you need to do is enter the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway. Making a circular path through the city, it links a series of parks over a 50-mile trek.
