Landscaping in the City of Trees isn’t always easy. For the best results, you need to complete projects and maintenance in the right seasons.
Spring
- Lawn Care: Mow weekly between 8 and 10 a.m.
- Irrigation: Starting on March 1st, follow Sacramento’s spring and summer water restrictions. Water only before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
- Mulch: Add new or replace in late spring to protect new growth in gardens.
- Planting: Plant trees, shrubs, vines, and perennials. Check out the city’s free compost program.
Summer
- Lawn Care: Mow weekly or stop irrigation and let your lawn go dormant.
- Irrigation: Follow the same restrictions that began in spring.
- Planting: Plant produce starting in August.
Fall
- Lawn Care: Mow once per week.
- Irrigation: Follow the spring and summer restrictions until Oct. 31. After that, you can water one day a week on Saturday or Sunday at any time of day.
- Leaf Cleanup: November to January is leaf season, so place excess leaves and other yard waste in the street for collection. You also can hire a leaf removal service.
- Hardscaping: This is a great time to plan and execute new hardscaping projects and lawn removals.
- Mulch: Apply in early fall.
- Fencing: Repair, replace, or install fencing.
- Planting: Plant trees and shrubs in October. Plant produce from September through November.
Winter
- Lawn Care: Mow every other week. You may be able to get away with mowing once a month or not at all depending on your grass type and how cold this year is.
- Irrigation: Follow the fall and winter restrictions until March 1st.
- Landscape Lighting: Counter the longer nights with path and decorative lights.
- Shrub Pruning: Prune plants while they have less leaves and are dormant.
- Planting: Plant frost-hardy produce in December.
