This cave draws over 100,000 visitors a year, enchanting them with its majestic underground scenery.
Next on our Springfield tour you'll find the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium. This institution inspires visitors with nature. The aquarium features creatures from aquatic habitats around the world. Their exhibits include organisms from the open ocean, freshwater rivers, and the Great Barrier Reef. The wildlife museum houses dioramas crafted to evoke the sights, sounds, and smells of environments such as the arctic and the African savanna. This museum is also a nonprofit conservation organization that works to preserve the world's natural habitats.

Springfield has a rich and complex history. Before US settlement, the region was home to Osage, Kickapoo, and Lenape peoples. The Indian Removal Act of 1830, forced these people from their land, opening the area for euro-American settlement. The first two settlers to arrive in the area were John Polk Campbell and his brother, who staked his claim by carving his initials into a tree.
Springfield would become an important site during the Civil War. At the beginning of the war, Springfield locals divided their loyalty, with part of the population supporting each side. A commercial hub of strategic importance, the city was captured by the Confederate army in the Battle of Wilson's Creek in August 1861. However, the Union returned and captured the city in October of the same year.
