Back in 1890, a tiny settlement was established along the Hillsboro River. By 1898, the settlement had grown to 20 people and was named Deerfield for the deer that peacefully grazed along the river. Deerfield's early settlers were farmers growing tomatoes, squash, green beans and even pineapples along the Intracoastal Waterway.

However, in 1939 the town changed its name to Deerfield Beach to attract tourists, and in 1952, the original Beach Pier was built of wood. Since the 1950s, the population has exploded from a few more than 2,000 people to more than 80,000 today.

If you’d like to explore the early history of Deerfield, the Butler House on East Hillsboro Blvd is a good place to start. The Butlers came to Deerfield Beach in 1910 and fell in love with what was then a tiny beach community. They built this lovely, Spanish style home in 1923, following plans they found in the popular magazine, the Ladies Home Journal. The home is beautifully restored and is a glimpse into Florida's life in the 1920s.

It’s a magical place to take a casual stroll through a park full of tropical, rain forest trees and plants.

Sullivan Park opened in 2017 and the central feature is a fabulous 2,200-square-foot splash pad for the kids. The park also has playgrounds and an eleven slip public marina, as well as a walkway along the Intracoastal Waterway.
