By the 1870s Embree and Duck Creek fought over which would receive the train station and post office. A judge settled the dispute by putting the post office between the two towns,, which eventually merged into Garland. By 1904, Garland was home to about 800 people. Starting in the 1930s, businesses began to move into the area and the population grew. As Dallas continued to expand, Garland's population would take off as a suburb, and by 1980, the city had grown to 140,000.
