ILife is a mixture of the old and the new in San Antonio. Founded by Spanish colonizers in 1718, it is the oldest municipality in Texas. It's also one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. What started as a missionary outpost has since grown into the seventh most populous city in the country, with more than 1.5 million people.
Today, historical sites built in the 1700s coexist with modern neighborhoods. Even as the city continues to develop, it hasn't forgotten its roots and culture. Native Americans of the Payaya tribe once inhabited the San Antonio River Valley region. Spanish colonizers arrived in 1691 and christened the area San Antonio in honor of St. Anthony of Padua. In 1718, Father Antonio de Olivares and Governor Martin de Alarcon built a mission and a settlement,. called the Mision de San Antonio de Valero and the Presidio San Later, in 1836, the city became famous for the Battle of the Alamo. It's where William Barrett Travis and James Bowie led an outmatched band of Texans to defeat. Every defender of the Alamo Mission was killed in battle. Afterward, they were all uplifted as martyrs and became a source of inspiration for the rest of the Texan Revolution. I
n the late 19th century, San Antonio saw an influx immigrants, bringing with them different cultures and languages. You can still explore many significant landmarks in the city.
The Alamo, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is free to visit. You can take part in guided battlefield tours and living history demonstrations. Other missions leftover from the days of Spanish occupation include Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion, Mission Espada, and the Mission San Juan. You can experience all these sites by walking the nine-mile Mission Trail.
The King William Historic District showcases a different piece of San Antonio's heritage. This 25-block suburb (the city's first suburb), consists of mansions built by German immigrants in the late 1800s. History buffs can also explore the San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral, built in 1873, and the St. Joseph Catholic Church, built in 1871.
San Antonio contains many modern sights and activities, as well. At the San Antonio River Walk (a.k.a. the Paseo del Rio), you can shop, eat, and explore the world-renowned urban waterway. The city's Japanese Tea Garden features 200 acres of landscaped gardens, waterfalls, koi ponds, and patios you can rent for events.
For families, there's the San Antonio Zoo, which houses animals from all over the world and hosts fun events. The city is also home to a SeaWorld amusement park, where you can enjoy thrill rides and close-up animal encounters.
