America's Finest Landscaping for America's Finest City
San Diego is famous for its friendly climate and beautiful beaches. While the city is a popular destination for tourists, it's also home to about 1.4 million people. It is often called "the birthplace of California" because it was the first place European colonizers visited on the West Coast.
San Diego is now the eighth-largest city in the country. It's also part of one of the biggest transnational urban areas, with a metro area that crosses the USA and Mexico. The economy relies on tourism, manufacturing, international trade, and the military.
The city is also famous for biotechnological research from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the UCSD Medical Center.
San Diego has a long military history. In the early 1900s, the U.S. Navy began establishing bases in the area. These included the Naval Base San Diego, the Naval Training Center San Diego, San Diego Naval Hospital, Camp Matthew, and Camp Kearny. During World War I, airplane manufacturers Consolidated Aircraft and Ryan Airlines located here, earning the city the moniker "The Air Capital of the West." San Diego was also the cornerstone of America's tuna fishing and canning industry.
Today, locals enjoy the perks of the city's long history of development. There's historical sites such as the USS Midway Museum. This interactive military museum sits inside America's longest-serving aircraft carrier. Then, there's the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, which honors American veterans.
Because of the area's idyllic weather and scenery, San Diego also boasts several natural attractions. La Jolla Cove, a protected ecological site, is a perfect spot for families to swim and snorkel. For adrenaline junkies, La Jolla's nature preserve features a world-famous diving spot. Nearby is La Jolla Shores Park, a mile-long beach. At Sunset Cliffs National Park, you can savor sweeping ocean views or explore the coastal bluffs and sea caves.
The city also offers loads of commercial entertainment options. San Diego Zoo, one of the most famous zoos in the world, hosts a collection of 3,500 rare and endangered animals. The Birch Aquarium at Scripps showcases more than 60 species of fish from all over the world. The city also holds some hidden gems that a tourist might miss, such as Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden. Art enthusiasts love this whimsical sculpture garden featuring the work of Nikki de Saint Phalle.
Another obscure sight is the Heritage Park Victorian Village near Old Town. It's a great place to step back in time and tour preserved Victorian homes or have tea at an authentic period teahouse.
