San Diego has a rich and complex past. The land was once inhabited by the San Dieguito, La Jolla, and Kumeyaay. The first European explorer to set foot on its shores was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who claimed San Diego Bay for the Spanish Empire in 1542. Permanent Spanish settlement began in 1769 with the arrival of settlers from New Spain and the Baja Peninsula.
When Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, San Diego became part of its Alta California territory. Americans captured the city after heavy fighting during the Mexican-American war. San Diego became an important hub for military infrastructure and manufacturing during World War II. The population grew rapidly along with the economy. To this day, San Diego has a thriving economy based on defense, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing.
