See More of Miami by Leaving Your Landscaping to the Pros
One of Florida's cultural hubs, Miami's nicknames include "Cruise Capital of the World," "Magic City," and the "Capital of Latin America." With so many titles, it's no wonder there's always something to do. The city is more than beautiful beaches or a port call for cruise ships. Miami is home to a marvelous array of museums, underwater adventures, and hidden gems that tourists haven't found yet.
One spot everyone should visit is the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. It's the second-largest performing arts center in the country. It's also home to the Florida Grand Opera and often hosts concerts and musicals. If the arts aren't on your weekend agenda, spark the mind and explore innovation at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science or drop by the Miami Children's Museum.
Want to get away from the mundane? Dive into an underwater city of the dead. Designed by Florida artist Kim Brandell, Neptune Memorial Reef is an artistic representation of the lost city of Atlantis. Reef features include a mixture of concrete and cremated remains, with commemorative plaques noting the resting places of loved ones. This underwater mausoleum is the world's largest human-made reef.
Don't feel like climbing into a wet suit? Try exploring one of the oldest European buildings in the Western Hemisphere. The Ancient Spanish Monastery dates from 1133 - 1141 A.D. In the 1920s William Randolph Hearst bought the monastery and had it shipped to New York. He never finished the project, and it ended up in Miami. Want something a little more exotic? Visit Monkey Jungle, a park where humans travel the area in cages while the monkeys roam free on acres of land. Another outdoor excursion takes you into the world of tropical plant conservation. The National Tropical Botanical Garden has five preserves, four of which are in Hawaii, with one in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood. The estate has nine acres of lush plant life, from mango trees to exotic plants the founder wanted to try out in Miami's climate.
